Q&A with Expert Thyroid Cancer Surgeon & Robotic Thyroid Surgeon, Dr. Eyas Alkhalili of the Clayman Thyroid Center

What motivated you to focus on thyroid surgery, and what keeps you passionate about it?

My interest in thyroid surgery started when I was a medical student. I was fascinated by the elegance of the operation and how great patients felt afterwards compared to other surgeries. But most of all, I love the great outcomes we are able to achieve in thyroid surgery. I stay passionate about thyroid surgery as there is always room for improvement. For example, we now use robotics to perform scarless approaches that allow us to achieve superior cosmetic outcomes.

What sets the Clayman Thyroid Center apart from others who perform thyroid surgery?

Here at the Clayman Thyroid Center, we perform more thyroid surgery than anywhere else in the world. Each one of us surgeons are 100% dedicated to performing thyroid surgery and nothing else. This means that we have the best possible outcomes. In addition, our entire team at the Hospital for Endocrine Surgery is top notch. For example, our ultrasound technicians perform only thyroid imaging and will perform close to 100 examinations a week, so they are really the best at what they do.

What are some of the most significant benefits of robotic thyroid surgery for patients?

Robotic thyroid surgery offers a superior cosmetic outcome because it enables us to perform scarless surgery and avoid neck incisions. We know that some patients' quality of life, particularly young women, is affected by the presence of neck scar as evidenced by a number of published scientific studies.  Thus, robotic thyroid surgery allows us to the long-term quality of life for our patients.

What can patients expect during their first consultation with you?

I treat patients like family. The same way I want my family member to be cared for by other providers. I always review all the details in their medical records prior to our consultation to allow more time for counseling. I always present patients with all the treatment options available to allow them to make an informed decision about the best plan of care.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of medicine that help you unwind?

Music! I play a number of musical instruments and music brings me and my family great joy. I stay active: running, yoga, swimming, kayaking and Skiing are all great ways to keep moving. While at home, I like to cook for my family, particularly Italian food. I also enjoy reading; I try to read at least one book each month.
