Visiting the Center
We will talk on the phone before you come.
Making arrangements for your visit to the Thyroid Surgery Center
Before you come I will undoubtedly have spoken with you on the phone and discussed your situation with you in some detail. In most cases, after you have made your appointment with us, you may simply bring with you all the important and relevant thyroid testing you have had done.
It is best to go to your doctor’s office to get this for yourself as many offices are so swamped with insurance related paperwork that sending us your info is quite low on their priority list, and it often does not get done within a reasonable period of time. Sometimes, however, it is important that I receive some information before you arrive, in order to save you an unnecessary trip should there be some reason that you would not qualify for thyroid surgery. This is about as remote a possibility as there could be, but I would not like any patient and their family to make an extended trip here only to find out that we could not help them for some reason.
Last year a lady came from Hong Kong, and I was a little more careful than usual to make sure things would work out for her before she bought her tickets. She came to the office on a Monday, had her outpatient surgery on Tuesday, and was back in China before the week was out. Most folks don’t travel quite that far to get here, but we would never want anyone to travel unnecessarily.
The thyroid tests that we are interested in may include all or just some of the following, depending on your particular case:
- Thyroid blood tests such as T3, T4, TSH, Serum Thyroglobulin and Thyroglobulin Antibodies
- Thyroid Antiperoxidase Antibodies (also called TPO in many testing laboratories),
- and rarely a Calcitonin level.
- Imaging studies may include Ultrasound, Thyroid Scan, and very rarely a CT scan or MRI.
Please don’t do any of these tests if you haven’t already just because you think I might need them. Already patients often come here with thousands of dollars of unnecessary testing. We will talk on the phone before you come and I can answer all your testing questions before you arrive.
We have a very nice program for our out of town and international patients that make your stay here simple and convenient.
A lady from Louisiana with a combination of Graves’ Disease and Papillary Cancer came a while back, had her surgery, stayed at a local resort, got a massage, and just luxuriated while her husband played golf. When they left, they thanked us for a terrific week and the patient literally said she would now have to find a different excuse to come back next year now that she was cured of her thyroid problems!
Please don’t misunderstand me to say this is not serious business or that we take our work lightly. Indeed, there is no greater responsibility than the sacred trust between a surgeon and his patient.
Still, it does not mean that we will not try to make the experience go as smoothly and as comfortably as possible. While you are here in Austin, we are available to you all days and at any hour. At The Thyroid Surgery Center of Texas, the patient is the center of our concern.
