After seeing thousands of patients from around the world and many of those who have come to us through our thyroid cancer Internet site, we have discovered that probably the most common difficulty that patients with thyroid tumors seem to have is that their physician has not taken the time to sit down and explain the surgical treatment plan to them in detail. This is probably a result of a health care system that has forced doctors to cram large volumes of patients into one day's work. It is our opinion that this is neither in the doctor's or patient's best interest. The feedback that we have received from our patients is that reading our website is like sitting across from a concerned physician. Probably the second most common observation we have made is that patients arrive at our clinic with thousands of dollars worth of testing that was completely unnecessary. Indeed, and this is especially true in large institutions, once a patient is found to have a "thyroid problem" they are immediately herded to a clinic that performs a battery of routine testing without regard for the individual patient's needs. This may be convenient for the institution, but it can be costly, invasive, painful, and often times unnecessary.

Our thyroid cancer clinic has thrived for more than fifty-four years as an extension of a medical center practice that began in 1949. The reason for this success is that each patient's diagnostic and treatment plan is carefully constructed to fit individual needs.

In the past few years many thyroid patients have made an appointment to come see us after visiting our thyroid web site. We have performed thyroid surgery on a large number of those patients. But we have also received an overwhelming number of calls from folks who are already in the middle of their thyroid treatment plan with their doctor, and they still call to just sort of "talk it over" with someone else. This is not fair to either the patient or his/her physician, and it accomplishes nothing. We, therefore, only accept calls from patients who have not yet been treated.
